History of Johnnie R. Carr Middle School

Johnnie R. Carr Middle School was established August 7, 2009. Carr Middle School is a community based school that educates 6th through 8th grade students. The school is named after Johnnie R. Carr, noted Civil Rights Leader and former President of the Montgomery Improvement Association. Mrs. Carr joined childhood friend Rosa Parks in the historic Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 and was instrumental in desegregating Montgomery schools.

Mrs. Johnnie R. Carr played a prominent role in history to many Alabamians; she wrote three books that can be found in public and school libraries; she is a historian in the Montgomery Public Schools history book; and she would go on to speak to thousands of school aged children each year at various events throughout the United States. Mrs. Carr's home has become an historic point of interest for tourist in Montgomery, Alabama.

Carr's Magnet Program

Johnnie R. Carr’s magnet program is a school-within-a-school in that the year-ahead core classes are standalone, but are located within a larger traditional school. The advantage to this arrangement is that the students are challenged with advanced work but get to experience the customs and traditions of a conventional school. The magnet students at Carr get to take advantage of arts, foreign language, and the sports program that other magnet schools may not offer.

There are approximately sixty magnet slots available per grade level. To apply to the highly competitive program students must have a 3.5 GPA, no blemishes on their discipline report, and have an exceptional attendance history. They must maintain a 3.0 to stay in the program. Students applying for admittance will follow the timeline released by the central office for all magnet applications. Applications and directions will be posted on Carr’s website at the appropriate time.

Magnet students that finish 8th grade at Carr will have the opportunity to transition to LAMP High School if they meet the school’s entrance qualifications.
